INTERNATIONAL WEEK

Monday 26th September - Friday 30th October

We have had so much fun this week celebrating our very own International Week.

Mrs Wilkinson and Miss Marsh's Languages Club kicked off our celebrations with a fantastic singing assembly on Monday morning, in which we learned to say (or should I say 'sing') hello in different languages. Monday was our "mother tongue day" coinciding with the official European Day of Languages. Lots of children created amazing learning journals describing their home cultures and languages. In school, we all enjoyed learning new languages from our peers! We even linked this to maths and RE work by gathering and handling data about the number of languages, religions and home countries in each of our classes.

On Thursday, every class chose a different country. They then baked famous cakes from their country, or decorated biscuits with their country's flags. These were sold during our Macmillan Coffee Afternoon on Friday. The hall was even decorated with all of our homemade flags, buntings and decorations to make it a truly international event!

On Friday, it was our French Day which was an amazing success! The children from Reception up to Year Six were all able to participate in a variety of activities, from building replica Eiffel Towers, to creating Parisian art, to food tasting in French cafés! We cannot wait to continue our French learning throughout the year...

ERASMUS

We have successfully completed the first year of our ERASMUS+ project of staff development.

This involves a core group of 6 staff accessing a programme of high quality immersion courses in France. The courses themselves consist of: small, ability-grouped language sessions, bespoke to the needs of the individual participants; training in primary phase language methodology and subject leadership; opportunities to visit a French primary school with a view to forming an enduring link; and carefully selected cultural activities which provide a wealth of potential cross curricular resources.

The objectives of this project are:

  • To improve staff and pupils’ confidence, competencies and abilities in FL (Foreign Languages) towards increasing prospects and employability.
  • To promote knowledge and interest of the French culture and traditions in order to motivate pupils to learn and set goals.
  • To enhance staff and pupils’ understanding of European citizenship and their place in the world and to promote the valuing of respect for all cultural differences.
  • To meet or exceed national curriculum expectations for FL competence by the end of Key Stage 2 ensuring pupils are ready for secondary school and further language study.

 International School Award

We are very excited to announce that we have successfully achieved reaccreditation of the prestigious International School Award funded by the British Council.

The British Council made some very positive comments about our application and stated that 'the pride you take in your global curriculum is palpable and the positive effects on all stakeholders in the process are also clear to see and are a credit to your school, as corroborated by your 'The World in One School' celebratory film project.'
