English

In English, all children at Broadfield will develop their literacy skills through prioritising the important skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening through an engaging curriculum. We believe that a thorough grasp of literacy skills is crucial to a high quality education and it is a fundamental life skill.

This is how we teach writing at Broadfield:

Our spelling curriculum is designed to provide a broad and balanced education that meets the needs of all children. We follow the award-recognised Ready Steady Spell by Literacy Counts to ensure that all pupils become fluent, accurate spellers. Our spelling curriculum is research-informed and impact-proven, helping children secure the essential skills and strategies they need to spell confidently across the curriculum. Through engaging activities, consistent teaching routines and regular opportunities to revisit prior learning, we help children move spelling knowledge into their long-term memory.

Our aim is to support children to become writers who are equipped with the tools they need to communicate clearly and effectively.

Spelling is taught in a clear and systematic way, with regular reviews and assessments.

From Year 3, children build on their phonetic-only spelling strategy taught in Little Wandle to using a wider variety of strategies that support children to become more confident spellers.

                                                                                    Handwriting

As a school we recognise that handwriting is an important skill and children’s ability to write fluently for the rest of their lives depends on a good foundation of taught handwriting from the early years of their education. We believe that handwriting is a developmental process with its own distinctive stages of progression from readiness for handwriting, through to letter joins, practicing speed and fluency and higher presentation skills. A flexible, fluent and legible handwriting style empowers children to write with confidence and creativity. At Broadfield we follow Pen pals handwrting scheme.
