Big Question...
What's great about Rochdale?
In English we are going to be reading the text ‘Just Ducks!’ by Nicola Davies and writing our own non-chronological reports. We will support our learning of this genre with a visit to Hollingworth Lake to feed the ducks and see them in their natural habitat.
In Maths we will be looking at addition and subtraction within 20, we will continue to write addition and number sentences. We will also continue to explore fact families.
In RE we are going to explore Judaism with a focus on the question ‘Who is Jewish and how do they live?’
In Geography we will be exploring our local area. We will think about where we live and will explore the history of Rochdale. We will also create simple maps.
In Science we will be learning about animals. We will find out about a range of different animals, what they eat, where they live and we will classify them.
In Art we will be studying Vincent Van Gogh. We will be focusing on his famous painting ‘Starry skies’. We will learn how to use different paintbrush techniques to create a variety of effects.
In PSHE we will discussing dreams and goals and what we need to do be successful in achieving them.

Big Question...
How have toys changed?
In English we explored and compared stories by the author Oliver Jeffers. We started by focusing on the story Lost and Found and used this write our own stories. We then compared Lost and Found to 'The Way Back Home' looking at similarities and differences between characters, settings and storylines. We then learnt all about instructions before writing our own for how to decorate a Christmas tree, using the text 'Pick a Pine' by Patricia Toht to help us. In Maths we will explored addition and subtraction within 10. We have continued to practice our number bonds to 10, studied fact families and started to write addition and subtraction number sentences using part whole models, tens frames and other visuals to help us. In RE we explored the question ‘Why does Christmas matter to Christians?’ As part of our learning we visited St Chad's church to strengthen our understanding of the Nativity and looked around for all the symbols linked to Christianity. In History we learnt all about toys from the past. We were lucky enough to have 'Grandma' come to visit us to tell us all about the toys she used to play with. We also borrowed some old toys from Touchstones that we could play with and compare to the toys we play with today. In Science we will explored everyday materials. We identified, named, described and compared different materials. We used words such as strong, weak, transparent, soft and dull. In DT we designed and created our own moving pictures using mechanisms including sliders and levers. We chose to create a boat picture to link with our learning on Lost and Found.

Big Question...
What makes me amazing?
In our first term in Year 1 we learnt all about ourselves. In English we looked at traditional tales with a focus on Jack and the Beanstalk. In Maths we started by sorting and counting objects before we moved onto finding one more and one less of a given number. We investigated the human body in Science and how they work. We also investigated our senses and which part of the body they belong to. In RE we explored Christianity and answered the question ‘Who do Christians say made the world?’ In History we learnt about Florence Nightingale and Edith Cavell and the impact they had on hospitals and nursing. We had a very special visit from Florence herself who told us all about her nursing career and how she helped the soldiers who had been injured. In Art we learnt all about colour! We explored primary and secondary colours as well as how we can use a paintbrush in different ways. We then used what we learnt to create a piece of Art in the style of Jackson Pollock.

Important things to remember...
Phonics
Phonics plays a huge part of our learning in Year 1. All children will take part in the Phonics Screening Check week beginning Monday 8th June. The purpose of the phonics screening check is to confirm that all children have learned phonic decoding to an age appropriate standard. With some exceptions, all pupils who have reached the age of 6 by the end of the school year must take the check during that academic year. Please find more information here -https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/676e908e517edf5c74c83728/Phonics_screening_check_information_for_parents.pdf
Our chosen scheme for phonics is Little Wandle Letters and Sounds. Please visit the Little Wandle website for more support on how you can help your children at home.
