In Reception we are encouraged to explore, create, be curious, messy and have fun. Through all of this, we learn!

All of our learning is focused on the 'Characteristics of Effective Learning'; Playing and Exploring, Active Learning and Creating and Thinking Critically. Our classrooms and outdoor area are set up to enhance your child's learning and development of skills in these areas. We promote the characteristics through our Achievosaur initiative in our key worker groups.  This year we are also an Early Adopter of the new Early Years Framework.

Projects

In Reception, we start by finding out what your child enjoys and use this to shape their learning. We also plan our projects around the key experiences and skills children need, based on our ongoing assessments.

Our aim is to nurture a love of learning by building on each child’s interests. By getting to know the children well and observing how they learn, we create engaging, hands-on opportunities that reflect their ideas and support the Characteristics of Effective Learning.

Summer A

Our Big Question...

How does our garden grow?

In Literacy this term, we will be exploring Jasper’s Beanstalk by Nick Butterworth, Errol’s Garden by Gillian Hibbs, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Using these stories, your child will describe characters, create story maps, and write simple instructions, helping them to develop their understanding of storytelling and story structures. Your child will continue to focus on writing simple sentences, using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

In Maths, we will be focusing on counting to 20. Your child will learn to recognise numbers up to 20, place them in the correct order, and identify patterns within numbers. We will also practise addition and subtraction within 20 before moving on to naming, manipulating, and rotating 2D shapes.

In Project, we will begin the term with History and Art week. We will be exploring the Titanic and why it is so well known. We will look at timelines and create artwork linked to our learning. We will then move on to investigating plants, exploring how they grow, what they need to survive, and how we can care for them. We will also investigate the life cycle of a plant and learn how plants help us in our everyday lives. We will finish the term with an exciting minibeast hunt, exploring the natural world around us.

In Phonics this term we will continue on our Phase 4 lesson will be introducing more tricky words. We will also continue to write phrases and short sentences.

Please ensure you read with your child everyday in order to support their reading, comprehension and phonics skills.

Our PE session is on a Monday. Please come to school wearing your PE kit on this day. This should include black jogging bottoms, shorts or leggings, a white polo top or t-shirt and a black jacket for outdoor PE sessions. Please also ensure your child has appropriate sports shoes with Velcro fastenings in their PE kit to change into. Please can all uniform and PE kit be labelled with your child's name.

Reading Books

Your child's reading books will be changed every Friday. Please can you read with your child at home for 10 minutes every night and sign their reading record. This Reading Record needs to be brought into school every day in order to move up the troll tree. If you make it to the top of the troll tree by reading every day you will be entered into the prize draw to win a brand new book in our celebration assembly.

Please respect our school books.
