Mrs. Spencer, Mr. Coldman and Mrs. Miah

Year 6 is a significant and exciting stage in your child’s education.
While it is a year that brings both hard work and new challenges, we are committed to providing the guidance, encouragement, and support needed to help every child thrive. Our goal is to nurture each pupil’s potential, empowering them to achieve their very best and to approach the next stage of their learning with confidence.

Please keep up to date with everything that is happening in all classes  on this page or via Class Dojo.

(If you don't have the code please speak to Mrs. Gibson, Miss. Jones or Mrs. Bellanti who will be able to give you your child's individual code.).

Please don't hesitate to make an appointment to speak to your child's class teacher if you have any questions.

English and Maths

Both core subjects will be taught in their class by the class teacher, who will be supported by the teaching assistant.

Homework

Monday to Friday the children will be asked to complete:

A reading task
Maths questions - varied areas of learning
TTRS
Grammar focus - varied areas of learning
Spellings (Words given on Monday and tested on Friday)
All homework is posted on Class Dojo and must be completed in the orange homework books.

Reading Books.

We kindly ask that all children bring their reading book and reading record to school every day. Regular reading is essential for developing fluency and comprehension, enabling pupils to access a broader and more challenging curriculum with confidence.

Reading books are changed weekly. Please either read with your child or encourage them to read independently for at least 20 minutes each time. Encouraging children to read a wide range of books is important – any reading is better than no reading at all.

You can support your child at home by listening to them read, discussing the story together, and encouraging them to share their understanding. The children may also be asked to read to an adult during the school day.

This partnership between home and school is vital in nurturing a lifelong love of reading and supporting your child’s academic success.

PE Kits.

Children have PE once a week. Please ensure that all children have the correct PE kit- which comprises of plain white T.Shirt, plain black leggings/joggers, plain black hoody/jacket and plain black trainers .

PE lessons are on Fridays each week.

SOME PE WILL BE OUTDOORS - PLEASE ENSURE CHILDREN HAVE SUITABLE CLOTHING IN THEIR KIT.

(THIS MUST INCLUDE TRAINERS AND A WARM JACKET).

Some children will also need a change of clothes for Forest School and outdoor learning during the course of the year, you will be informed if your child is taking part in Forest School.

Don't forget that PE kit needs to be worn for any after school sport clubs too, so must be available for those.

SATS information

Please ensure your child attends every day and continues to focus in lessons as we approach the SATs.  These take place w/c 12th May 2025.  All the information that was given during our SATs meeting in the Spring Term is included below.

Our Projects

Our projects will be changing as the year progresses, we will update this page and let you know via Class Dojo to keep you fully informed. You will also find links to our work and any examples further down the page.

Our Autumn A project big question:

How did World War Two affect the lives of people in Rochdale?

In English:

As part of our English curriculum, we will be creating a descriptive setting inspired by our class novel, When the Sky Falls by Phil Earle. This activity will allow children to explore the author’s use of language, imagery, and atmosphere, before applying these techniques in their own writing.

Through this work, pupils will develop their descriptive vocabulary, sentence structure, and ability to convey mood and detail. This not only strengthens their creative writing skills but also deepens their engagement with the text and enhances their overall reading comprehension.

In Maths

We will focus on place value and the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). A secure understanding of place value underpins all areas of mathematics, so we will ensure that pupils can confidently read, write, compare, and order numbers, as well as understand the value of each digit.

They will then apply this knowledge to develop accuracy and efficiency in using the four operations, both mentally and in written calculations. Pupils will also be encouraged to explain their reasoning, solve problems, and apply their skills to real-life contexts, helping them build strong mathematical fluency and confidence.

In Science

We will be exploring the topic Animals Including Humans, with a particular focus on the circulatory system. They will learn about the main components of the circulatory system, including the heart, blood, and blood vessels, and understand how these work together to transport oxygen and nutrients around the body.

Pupils will investigate the structure and function of the heart in more detail, learning about its chambers, valves, and how it pumps blood. They will also explore the impact of diet, exercise, and lifestyle on heart health, linking their scientific knowledge to real-life choices that promote well-being.

Practical investigations and model-making will help pupils visualise the process, develop their enquiry skills, and build a deeper understanding of how this vital system keeps the human body functioning.

In History:

We will be studying World War II, with a focus on the Axis and Allied powers, the role of women during the war, and the process of evacuation. They will explore how these events shaped daily life and impacted communities, with a particular emphasis on how the war affected the people of Rochdale.

Pupils will investigate the social, cultural, and economic changes brought about by the conflict, examining personal stories, photographs, and historical records to gain a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of those who lived through this period. Through discussion, research, and enquiry-based activities, they will develop their historical skills, including evaluating sources, understanding cause and effect, and drawing connections between local and global events.

This topic encourages pupils to appreciate the resilience and contributions of individuals and communities during challenging times, while also fostering critical thinking about the past and its impact on the present.

In ICT:

Digital Citizenship - in this unit, we will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the digital world safely, responsibly, and critically. The key focus of the unit is exploring the question: “How can we distinguish between reliable and unreliable information online?”

Through a series of carefully designed lessons and activities, pupils will learn to evaluate online content, recognise trustworthy sources, and understand the importance of digital etiquette and safety. This unit supports children in becoming responsible digital citizens, equipping them with the tools to make informed decisions and engage positively in an increasingly digital society.
