Welcome to Year 6

Captain Hook: Mrs. Gibson and Miss. Jones

Tinkerbell: Mrs. Bellanti

Mrs. Spencer, Mr. Coldman and Mrs. Miah

Year 6 is a significant and exciting stage in your child’s education.
While it is a year that brings both hard work and new challenges, we are committed to providing the guidance, encouragement, and support needed to help every child thrive. Our goal is to nurture each pupil’s potential, empowering them to achieve their very best and to approach the next stage of their learning with confidence.

Please keep up to date with everything that is happening in all classes  on this page or via Class Dojo.

(If you don't have the code please speak to Mrs. Gibson, Miss. Jones or Mrs. Bellanti who will be able to give you your child's individual code.).

Please don't hesitate to make an appointment to speak to your child's class teacher if you have any questions.

English and Maths

Both core subjects will be taught in their class by the class teacher, who will be supported by the teaching assistant.

Homework

Monday to Friday the children will be asked to complete:

A reading task
Maths questions - varied areas of learning
TTRS
Grammar focus - varied areas of learning
Spellings (Words given on Monday and tested on Friday)
All homework is posted on Class Dojo and must be completed in the orange homework books.

Reading Books.

We kindly ask that all children bring their reading book and reading record to school every day. Regular reading is essential for developing fluency and comprehension, enabling pupils to access a broader and more challenging curriculum with confidence.

Reading books are changed weekly. Please either read with your child or encourage them to read independently for at least 20 minutes each time. Encouraging children to read a wide range of books is important – any reading is better than no reading at all.

You can support your child at home by listening to them read, discussing the story together, and encouraging them to share their understanding. The children may also be asked to read to an adult during the school day.

This partnership between home and school is vital in nurturing a lifelong love of reading and supporting your child’s academic success.

PE Kits.

Children have PE once a week. Please ensure that all children have the correct PE kit- which comprises of plain white T.Shirt, plain black leggings/joggers, plain black hoody/jacket and plain black trainers .

PE lessons are on Fridays each week.

SOME PE WILL BE OUTDOORS - PLEASE ENSURE CHILDREN HAVE SUITABLE CLOTHING IN THEIR KIT.

(THIS MUST INCLUDE TRAINERS AND A WARM JACKET).

Some children will also need a change of clothes for Forest School and outdoor learning during the course of the year, you will be informed if your child is taking part in Forest School.

Don't forget that PE kit needs to be worn for any after school sport clubs too, so must be available for those.

SATS information

Please ensure your child attends every day and continues to focus in lessons as we approach the SATs.  These take place w/c 11th May 2026.  More information will be given to parents/carers and pupils in a SATs meeting in the Spring Term.

Our Projects

Our projects will be changing as the year progresses, we will update this page and let you know via Class Dojo to keep you fully informed. You will also find links to our work and any examples further down the page.

Our Autumn B project big question:

How did World War Two affect the lives of people in Rochdale?

In English:

As part of our English curriculum, we will be creating an explanation text linked to our science unit on the circulatory system.  This activity will allow children to explore the features of non-fiction writing, understand the layout and learn how to use technical vocabulary to explain to a specific audience, before applying these techniques in their own writing.  After this, we will read the book, The Arrival by Shaun Tan, and create a narrative piece.  We are sure the children will love this book as much as we do, the imagery is breathtaking and the story has real impact.

Through this work, pupils will develop their descriptive vocabulary, sentence structure, and ability to convey mood and detail. This not only strengthens their creative writing skills but also deepens their engagement with the text and enhances their overall reading comprehension.

In Maths

We will explore factors, multiples, prime, square and cube numbers, building on our understanding of number relationships.  We'll learn how these concepts connect and help us solve more complex problems. We will then use this foundational knowledge to help us learn how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions.

In Science

We will be exploring the topic Light.  Pupils will be able to recognise that light appears to travel in straight lines, use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain that objects are seen because they give out or reflect light into the eye.  During our science lessons, pupils will be able to explain that we see things because light travels from light sources to our eyes or from light sources and then to our eyes and why shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them.  We will also learn how simple optical instruments work, e.g. periscope, telescope, binoculars, mirror, magnifying glass.

In History:

We will be studying World War II, with a focus on the Axis and Allied powers, the role of women during the war, and the process of evacuation. They will explore how these events shaped daily life and impacted communities, with a particular emphasis on how the war affected the people of Rochdale.

Pupils will investigate the social, cultural, and economic changes brought about by the conflict, examining personal stories, photographs, and historical records to gain a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of those who lived through this period. Through discussion, research, and enquiry-based activities, they will develop their historical skills, including evaluating sources, understanding cause and effect, and drawing connections between local and global events.

This topic encourages pupils to appreciate the resilience and contributions of individuals and communities during challenging times, while also fostering critical thinking about the past and its impact on the present.

In ICT:

We will be learning how to use Canva to design eye-catching posters for our Christmas Fair and exploring other creative digital projects to develop our design and technology skills.

In Design & Technology:

We will be designing, making and evaluating a healthy snack, learning how to choose nutricious ingredients and create food that's both tasty and good for us.  Pupils will develop their cutting and slicing skills.
