Summer A - What is it like in South America? 

In English - This term we will begin by finishing off our work surrounding the text 'The Great Paper Caper' and the genre of Mystery. Next, we will complete some work on Poetry - specifically shape poetry. Reading skills will be developed and children will be able to explore and collect word families; identify the layout of a poem and how it reflects the theme; read poems and present with intonation and expression amongst other skills. Children will be able to write a poem with a structure, which includes appropriate language selected from word banks/families and features of shape poems or calligrams. 

For the final part of this term children will delve into the genre of Biography though the study of the Biography of David Attenborough. Reading skills will be developed through the children's ablitly to discuss and sequence events, raising questions to answer through research, identification of the purpose of paragraphs and by the end of the unit  children will know and understand the features of biography. Children will gather content by conducting targeted research and will organise the findings into appropriate sections. The writing for this term will involve children writing their own biography including all the features explored.

 

In Maths - we will explore a few different topics within our maths lessons this term. We will by continuing with our unit of Fractions A before moving on to Mass and capacity where we will learn more about reading scales and how to measure accurately. We will then move on to Fractions B which will allow us to learn the skill of adding and subtracting fractions.  

 

 In Geography - This term Year 3 will learn all about South America and Rio! 

 

In Science - Our topic this term and next term will be plants. This unit will take the whole Summer Term as we will be going into more detail, working with practical resources such as real plants and we will be completing investigations to learn as much as possible about plants.

 

In RE - We will learn about what it is like to be a Christian this term.

 

In Music - For the first 3 weeks in music we will complete a unit called: Samba with Sérgio

This unit explores call-and-response through word rhythms, and body and vocal percussion. It also gives a snapshot into samba and carnival.

Next, we will complete an electronic dance style unit called: Fly with the stars

During the unit, pupils will develop listening skills in recognising a song’s structure and changing chords, practise identifying crotchet and quaver durations, and develop composing skills using these durations and chords to create an accompaniment for the song.

 

In Computing - We will teach programming though the website: Scratch. 

  

In PE - For indoor PE we will be learning a variety of Latin dance styles such as the Cha cha and the Mambo. We will learn how to perform a range of simple moves, working individually and with a partner.

 

MFL- In Spanish we will learn the names of different fruits.

 

In DT - Children will learn how to create a moving toy with levers and linkages.

 

In PSHE - We will learn about different relationships.

 

Homework

Children are expected to practise reading their reading book for ten minutes every day. A parent or carer will need to sign their reading record once they have listened to their child read. Children will be given weekly spellings each Friday and they will need to learn these spellings for their spelling test which will take place the following Friday. Children will also be given Maths tasks to complete and be expected to practice timetables on TT Rock Stars daily. Your child may also receive handwriting and additional maths homework.

 

PE Kits.

Children have PE once a week for 2 hours.  This will incorporate an indoor PE session and then an outdoor session. 

Both classes can come into school on Thursday in correct PE kit. This is plain black joggers/leggings, a plain white T-shirt and a plain black hoodie/jacket as well as plain black trainers. Shoes MUST NOT be worn for indoor PE due to safety reasons.
