Summer B - What Are Earthquakes?

In English - We will be studying biographies this term. Our focus text will be the biography of David Attenborough. Our reading outcomes will be for children to be able to discuss and sequence events, raise questions and answer research questions. Children will also learn to orally recount a series of events using time connectives. They will be able to identify the purpose of paragraphs and notice and analyse the common features of biographies and their layout. In terms of gathering content this unit will allow children to use a range of sources to research for biographies to then select key parts and organise the information in the correct layout. Children will be able to write their own biography at the end of this unit and will include headings, subheadings, time connectives and conjunctions.

Our second topic in English this term will be Aesop's Fables by Michael Rosen. For reading aims, children will be able to take account of punctuation; discuss key events; retell orally and in writing; predict events; infer thoughts, feelings and speech of characters; discuss themes; identify key points in a plot structure. Children will develop their gathering content skills by developing their own plot for a fable; explore what characters think, say and feel for the new story. By the end of this unit, children will be able to write a fable with a series of events, which includes features and focus skills.

In Maths - we will explore a few different topics within our maths lessons this term. We will cover the units of: Money, Time, Shape and finally Statistics.

In Money, we will cover: Pounds and pence, converting pounds and pence, adding and subtracting money and finally finding change.

In Time we will cover: Roman numerals, telling the time to 5 minutes and to one minute, A.M and P.M, digital and analogue clock, Hours, minutes, seconds, units of time and problems around time. In Shape we will explore the different 3D shapes and their properties.

In Geography - This term Year 3 will learn all about Earthquakes! We will look at these areas in detail-

Lesson 1- The structure of the Earth, Lesson 2- Features of earthquakes, Lesson 3- Famous earthquakes, Lesson 4- Effects of earthquakes, Lesson 5- What happens after an earthquake?

In Science - We will continue our unit of plants this term. This unit will take the whole Summer Term as we will be going into more detail, working with practical resources such as real plants and we will be completing investigations to learn as much as possible about plants. We will also be learning in our polytunnel!

In RE - We will focus on learning about Judaism and our big question is: How do family life and festivals show what matters to Jewish people?

In Music - We will complete an electronic dance style unit called: Fly with the stars. During the unit, pupils will develop listening skills in recognising a song’s structure and changing chords, practise identifying crotchet and quaver durations, and develop composing skills using these durations and chords to create an accompaniment for the song.

In Computing - We will continue to teach programming though the website- Scratch. Following this we will revisit Google Docs and develop our word processing skills, linking what we do to other areas of the curriculum

In PE - We have two exciting units:

Indoor: Circuit Training

Children will take part in a series of mini circuits where they will learn the best techniques for completing each activity. In the final lesson, children will have the opportunity to complete a full circuit including every activity they have trained for.

Outdoor: Basketball

Dribble with head up using both hands, shoot accurately, work as a team to attack and defend, find space and follow rules.

MFL- In Spanish we will revise the first unit of 'I am learning Spanish' which is all about conversation and basic phrases.

In DT - Children will learn how to create a moving toy with levers and linkages.

In PSHE - This half term we will be looking at the jigsaw piece - Changing me.

Homework

Children are expected to practise reading their reading book for ten minutes every day. A parent or carer will need to sign their reading record once they have listened to their child read. Children will be given weekly spellings each Friday and they will need to learn these spellings for their spelling test which will take place the following Friday. Children will also be given Maths tasks to complete and be expected to practice timetables on TT Rock Stars daily. Your child may also receive handwriting and additional maths homework.

PE Kits.

Children have PE once a week for 2 hours.  This will incorporate an indoor PE session and then an outdoor session.

Both classes can come into school on Thursday in correct PE kit. This is plain black joggers/leggings, a plain white T-shirt and a plain black hoodie/jacket as well as plain black trainers. Shoes MUST NOT be worn for indoor PE due to safety reasons.
